Angelo’s Bayonet Exercise, 1857
Published in July 1857, the year of the Indian Mutiny, and shortly after the Crimean War, this official booklet, by Henry Angelo, superintendent of sword exercises in the Horse Guards is intended for the instruction of instructors in bayonet drill. Illustrated with line drawings of the postures and positions described, it gives a perfect picture of bayonet exercises and drill in the Victorian army. One of the more interesting parts of the pamphlet, besides the numerous images of the various drill positions, is the catalogue of military books for sale at the back of the publication. Bound in a laid paper, printed wrap.
