Since 1977 we have provided a complete bookbinding, conservation, and restoration service.
The restoration of valuable antiquarian and rare books is a specialty craft in which we take great pride. Our firm is expert in the restoration of rare books, parish & town registers, &c. Extreme care is taken to deal with these works in as conservative a manner as is possible, by preserving as much of the original structure whenever possible. Over the past 40 plus years, we have developed an expansive clientele of historic sites, two state governors, movie prop masters and large private collections.
As a result of our expertise in the field of conservation, we have developed methods of repair, refurbishing and restoration which are proprietary to our firm. Those rare and valuable items which cannot be restored to their former state can be protected and salvaged by other means.We specialize in creative conservation. Our custom made boxes and protective portfolios are sought after by discriminating collectors.
Only the finest archival materials are used in our restorations. Care is taken to insure that all work meets the PIRA standard for archival restoration and preservation. Museum standards are maintained throughout each step of the restoration process.
In addition to providing restoration services, a comprehensive service for the rebinding of all books is also available. Previous bindings matched within reason, or alternative styles can be designed if preferred. Bindings may be executed in cloth, calfskin, goatskin, pigskin, morocco as well as sheep. Each work is individually planned to the client’s specifications. Half or quarter bindings are available with either linen or hand marbled paper boards.
We also work in close association with fine paper and art restoration specialists, and can provide museum quality services in these areas as well. While all binding is done on our premises, these specialty items are sent to sophisticated laboratories for de-acidification, neutralization of paper acid, relining for oil paintings, re-varnishing, etc. The firms we deal with practice archival work in these specialty areas and provide their services to many prestigious collections and museums.
