Sketch of a Tactick for the Column & the Battalion of Monsieur de Folard
$20.00
This work, published in Dublin in 1731 is a rare transition manual and drill book. The work presented here was translated with commentary by Rochfort McNeale and is dedicated interestingly enough to the Earl of Orkney, &c., &c, General of His Majesty’s Foot Forces and Governor of Virginia. The work is important in that it displays the transition of the use of the pike to the bayonet by explaining how they are to be dispersed within lines for attack and defense. The work also contains information on the use of grenadiers within the formations. There are 8 plates on 5 pages, with interesting engravings and cartouches. Folard’s works were considered to be among the best in France, although there was difficulty in getting them into the hands of British Officer Corps due to a nativist contempt of things French. McNeale was one of the few officers who saw the value in Folard and did his best to disseminate it as much as possible. The work is important because of the insight it provides regarding the evolutionary development of field tactics based upon the new technology of the bayonet. Bound in a marbled wrap, with printed label.
